AI companions don't remember the way people do. They combine several techniques to simulate it, and the word "memory" on a feature list can mean any of them.

Four kinds of memory you'll see advertised

• Session memory: the AI remembers what you said earlier in the current conversation. Almost every platform has it, but it may be gone when you start a new chat.
• Cross-session memory: facts carry from one conversation to the next. You mention your job on Monday and the AI brings it up on Wednesday.
• Long-term memory: the platform summarizes your history and pulls the relevant parts into each new conversation, so the relationship can develop over weeks and months.
• Editable memory: you can view, add, correct or delete what the AI has stored about you. It's less common, but it's the most useful kind when the AI gets something wrong.

What's happening under the hood

Most platforms combine four building blocks:

A general AI assistant can reset between conversations; you don't need it to remember last week to draft today's email. An AI girlfriend that resets loses the core of what it offers. Memory is what gives you emotional continuity (it asks about the presentation you mentioned three days ago), personalization that deepens over time (your humor, the nickname you prefer, the scenarios you enjoy) and relationship depth (callbacks, inside jokes and storylines that span sessions). What "Remembers You" Really Means: Six Things to Check

Memory isn't a single feature. It's a stack of capabilities, and a platform can be strong on some and weak on others:

Not in the table: Jupi AI documents no memory feature in its current app, Eva AI lists automatic memory without saying how free and Premium differ, and AI Girlfriend Chat & Roleplay is no longer on the App Store.

Mind Map 2.0 shows the people, places and topics your Nomi has connected, and lets you correct, add and lock entries (the underlying long-term memories themselves aren't edited directly).

Persistent memory is included on the free tier, which needs no credit card and allows 50 messages a day. The Standard subscription ($15.99/month, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year, about $8.33/month) adds unlimited messaging, voice and group chats. Nomi has native iOS and Android apps, but no live video calls and no pricing page on its marketing site.

Kindroid: layered memory you can partly edit

Kindroid layers automatic long-term memory (consolidated from chats, group chats and calls), Cascaded Memory (about 480,000 characters on the standard subscription) and Learned Context: running notes on your relationship, important facts and ongoing threads that you can view and edit. Journal entries work as a keyphrase-triggered lorebook that you write or approve. You can also see which memories were recalled for a reply and deprioritize unhelpful ones, though the cascaded memory itself stays invisible. The Ultra and MAX add-ons grow cascaded memory to about 1.2 million or 2.8 million characters (Kindroid's December 2025 figures).

There's no ongoing free plan: new accounts get a one-time 50-message preview (15 in some regions), and the 3-day trial needs a payment method. The subscription, which includes Cascaded Memory, Learned Context, voice and live video calls and NSFW chat, is listed at $15.99/month, $42.99 every 3 months or $159.99/year on the US App Store (Kindroid's website shows no price list, and it says web checkout is usually cheaper). The Ultra ($28.99/month) and MAX ($68.99/month) add-ons are monthly-only, need the subscription (MAX also needs Ultra) and unlock only for accounts with significant chat and call history.

AI Peeps: memory you can see and edit

AI Peeps ties a three-step memory system to its plans. The free tier (30 messages a day) has basic memory that mainly covers the latest part of the conversation, with 1 memory trigger. Peep Chat ($8.99/month) and Peep Pal ($14.99/month) add a stronger memory you can view. Peep Pro ($29.99/month; yearly plans cost 10 times the monthly price) unlocks long-term editable memory with up to 10 memory triggers; it summarizes key details from previous chats and lets you view and edit what your companion remembers. Trigger words can be highlighted in chat, so you can see when a stored memory is being used.

Our overall score: 9.0/10, second only to SweetDream AI, and our pick if you want to curate what your companion knows: if it gets a detail wrong, you correct it rather than hoping it eventually updates.

These platforms document their memory clearly, but the strongest version sits on their most expensive plan.

Darlink AI

Darlink AI brands itself around Living Memory, and its memory is tiered by plan. The free plan (5 messages) is session-only. Essential ($12.99/month, or $9.99/month billed annually) has Base Memory, which focuses on the current session. Advanced ($27.99/month) adds Enhanced Memory, with stronger preference tracking and continuity between sessions. Living Memory, which Darlink advertises as retaining emotional context, inside jokes and important dates for 30+ days, is on Ultimate only ($49.99/month, or $32.99/month billed annually). We couldn't re-confirm the 30-day figure on Darlink's site at our last check.

Darlink is Swiss-based, with AES-256 encryption and a privacy dashboard, which matters if you're concerned about how your personal details are stored. It's web-only, and video generation is subscription-only.

Our overall score: 8.4/10. If memory is your reason for choosing Darlink, budget for Ultimate.

MyDreamCompanion

MyDreamCompanion offers two memory levels. Premium ($11.99/month, or $69.99/year, about $5.84/month) includes standard memory that carries context across sessions. Ultimate ($44.99/month, or $299.88/year, about $24.99/month) adds ultra long-term memory, which extends retention further, including emotional context and evolving relationship dynamics (no duration is published). Chat settings include an Auto Memory Log and an editable conversation summary, though our review calls these controls more limited than a full memory editor.

Memory matters most here for immersive NSFW roleplay, where it keeps scenarios and character dynamics consistent. Subscriptions are non-refundable except for errors on the company's side, and the platform is web-only.

Nectar AI

Nectar AI's memory grows with each plan. The free tier (15 messages a day) keeps the last 15 messages in memory, Premium ($9.99/month) has an 8K context window, Pro ($19.99/month) 16K, and Ultimate ($34.99/month, or $179.99/year) 64K plus long-term memory, which our review calls the most meaningful upgrade on the platform. Automatic and custom memories stay with a conversation across sessions, but a new conversation doesn't carry memories over from an earlier one. The character builder gives you control over appearance, personality, voice and backstory, and memory builds on that persona.

Our overall score: 7.9/10. Strong character-plus-memory potential, but long-term memory needs the top plan.

SpicyChat AI

SpicyChat AI's memory scales with its plans (prices in effect since September 8, 2026): 4K context plus the Memory Manager, where you can edit, pin or delete memories, on Get a Taste ($5.95/month); 8K plus Semantic Memory 2.0 on True Supporter ($19.95/month); and up to 32K, depending on the model, on I'm All In ($29.95/month). Semantic memory summarizes key details into memories that last beyond the basic context window. The free tier has unlimited text messages, with ads and a waiting queue. Because the library is mostly community-built, how well a character holds together also depends on how well its creator wrote it.

Platforms That Count Memory in Messages

Some platforms state memory as a number of messages, which makes their plans easy to compare:

• FantasyGF (8.6): no smart chat memory on Free (16 messages), 110 messages on Premium ($12.99/month, or $69.99/year) and 300 on Ultra ($49.99/month, or $299.99/year).
• Joi AI (8.6): an 8,000-message smart memory on Premium ($19.99/month); no editable memory documented.
• GoLove AI (7.7): its site promises "permanent memory", and the ULTRA tier (price not stated) lists an 8,000-message smart memory. GoLove doesn't explain how its memory works or document a way to edit it.
• Kupid AI (4.9): the last 30 messages on Free (15 messages in total), the last 100 on Pro ($12.99/week) and unlimited on Ultra ($24.99/week, or $299/year). With Pro's 100-message limit, long conversations lose older context.

These platforms list memory as part of a broader package, without publishing much detail about how it works or tying it closely to a plan.

SweetDream AI

SweetDream AI lists a "smart memory" system that remembers your desires, limits and habits, so chats feel more personal over time. Its published plans don't separate memory by tier, and there's no documented way to view or edit it. Memory comes as part of a broad package: live AI phone calls (including to your own phone number), live video calls and Live Cam with featured characters, voice, image and video generation, and custom AI girlfriends or boyfriends. The free tier includes daily free messages with the ready-made characters; Premium, sold as weekly ($12.99), 3-month ($79) or yearly ($179) plans, unlocks custom companions, media generation and calls.

Our overall score: 9.1/10, the highest in our ranking. Its top category scores (9.5) are for chat quality, video generation, character depth and realism, and we don't score memory separately, but if you want memory as part of the highest-rated all-round experience, start here.

Candy AI

Candy AI lists memory and adaptation: it learns your style and remembers your preferences, and it pairs with a detailed character builder and 100+ pre-made characters. Memory is automatic, deleting or resetting a chat clears that conversation's memory, and a Premium Plus tier adds memory slots. The free account gives you 5 messages in total; Premium is $13.99/month ($9.99 for the first month), or $3.99/month billed yearly, with unlimited text chat.

Our overall score: 8.5/10. If deep long-term memory is your top priority, the memory-first platforms above give you more to work with.

Replika

Replika takes a wellness-focused approach. Its memory carries emotional context between sessions and refers back to past difficulties and progress, alongside mood tracking, a diary and coaching activities. Some memories are visible in the app's Memory tab, and the Ultra annual plan (priced in the app) adds saving messages to memory. It's designed for a companion that notices how you've been feeling, rather than one built for elaborate roleplay continuity. The free tier covers basic chat, and the US App Store lists monthly plans from $7.99 and annual plans from $49.99. Replika's terms don't allow explicit content.

Our overall score: 7.4/10, held back mainly by low image and video scores. For supportive companionship with memory, it remains a strong choice.

• Soulkyn AI (8.5) describes retrieval-based memory with chain summarization. The free plan has basic memories; every paid plan, from €24.99/month, includes unlimited memories.
• Secrets AI (7.4) offers basic memory for free (20 responses a day), advertises "4x memory recall" on Premium ($19.99/month, or $109.99/year) and 6x on Ultimate ($39.99/month), and keeps memories even if you clear the chat.

It's a question people rarely ask, but it matters for three reasons:

• Mistakes happen. AI memory can store the wrong job title, a misremembered relationship or an incorrect inference. With editable memory you fix it in seconds; with opaque memory, a wrong fact can shape replies for as long as you use the platform.
• Trust needs inspection. It's harder to rely on a companion when you don't know what it has stored about you.

The fullest controls are on AI Peeps (view from Peep Chat, view and edit with up to 10 triggers on Peep Pro, with memory references highlighted in chat), Kindroid (editable Learned Context and journal entries, plus a view of which memories were recalled), Nomi AI (Mind Map 2.0, where you correct, add and lock entries) and SpicyChat AI (the Memory Manager, where you edit, pin or delete memories, from Get a Taste). On every other platform we review, memory is automatic. Look for a memory or facts section in the settings before you commit.

How to Check a Platform's Memory Yourself

Feature lists only tell you so much. This two-session check works on any AI girlfriend platform, and a free tier with a daily allowance, such as Nomi AI's or AI Peeps', is enough to run it.

Session 1 (day 1, about 20 minutes). Have a normal conversation. Within it, mention a few specific things about yourself: a name (a friend, a pet, a coworker), an upcoming event (a meeting, a trip, a deadline), a nickname you like, and how you feel about something recent. Keep it natural; don't flag them as "remember this". End the session and note the facts somewhere outside the platform.

Session 2 (day 2 or later, about 25 minutes). Start a new conversation on an unrelated topic and chat for 5 to 10 minutes without mentioning any of the facts. A light cue such as "I just got home after a long day" is fine. Then check, in this order:

1. Active memory: has the AI brought up any of the facts on its own, such as asking about the event?
2. Contradiction handling: say something that subtly contradicts one of the facts. Does the AI notice and ask?
3. Passive memory: ask directly about each fact. Does it remember, and accurately?

• Passive memory works but active memory and contradiction handling don't: basic memory, fine for casual use.
• Even passive memory is hit-or-miss: weak memory, so don't commit to a long subscription for continuity.

To check long-term decay, repeat the check after three days and again after a week.

Check the plan, not just the platform. Darlink AI, Nectar AI, MyDreamCompanion, FantasyGF and Kupid AI all give their strongest memory to higher plans, so a free-tier check can understate what a paid plan does. Some free tiers are also too small for the check: Candy AI and Darlink AI allow 5 messages, and Kupid AI 15. Where possible, run it on the plan you intend to pay for, ideally a monthly plan before any annual one.

What AI memory doesn't do

• Perfect recall of every conversation. Context windows and storage limits make compression and loss unavoidable over months of daily chat.
• Human-like memory. The AI doesn't experience your conversations; it processes text. It can refer to last month's conversation if it's stored, but there's no emotional weight behind the reference.
• Learning from everything you do. Most memory is either explicit (you or the platform save facts) or based on recent context. Don't assume the AI is building a deep picture of you over months unless the platform says it does.

If marketing copy implies total recall across years of chats, treat it with caution until the product's FAQ and privacy policy back it up.
