Chai AI Review
User-made AI characters for roleplay on Android and the web; its rules exclude explicit chat, and there's no iPhone app as of October 2026
Last updated · Prices checked · How we review
Bottom line
Chai suits adults who want roleplay and story chats with user-made characters on Android or in a browser, and who are fine without explicit content: Chai says its models refuse it. The Android app is free with ads, but store reviewers say chatting now uses Pieces (sold at about 1.4¢ each), and some regions require a subscription. Chai Web Pro costs $9.99 a week or $159.99 a year. The iPhone app is not on the App Store as of October 24, 2026. Our score: 6.1/10.
Pay for it if
- You want a feed of user-made characters (Chai cites over 25 million) for roleplay and story chat
- You're on Android, or happy to use Chai Web in a browser on a PC or phone
- You want a platform whose rules exclude sexually explicit chat and that says it checks age by selfie or ID
- You'll pay yearly: Chai Web Pro's $159.99 year costs 69% less than 52 weekly payments
Skip it if
- You need an iPhone app: Chai's isn't on the App Store as of October 24, 2026
- You want NSFW roleplay: Chai's Safety Center says its models refuse sexually explicit content
- You want a memory feature you can view or edit; Chai documents none
- You need a refund option: Chai Web payments are non-refundable unless the law requires otherwise
What is Chai AI?
Chai is an AI character chat platform built around user-made bots: you swipe through characters other people created and roleplay with them, or build your own and keep it private or public. It is for adults 18 and over, and its Safety Center says its models refuse sexually explicit content, so it fits story and character chat rather than NSFW roleplay. Chai Research Corp., a Palo Alto company founded in January 2021, runs two separate products: the Chai app (on Android; the iPhone app is not on the App Store as of October 24, 2026) and Chai Web at chai-ai.com, which has its own accounts and prices. Chai says it trains and serves its own language models, and reports over 1 million daily users and a $120 million annualized revenue run-rate as of October 1, 2026 (company figures, unaudited).
What happened to Chai in 2026?
Chai spent 2026 moving from free-with-ads toward paid access. In order:
- January: country-based access tiers. PiunikaWeb reported free use ending in 22 countries, including India, Pakistan and Egypt, while the US, Canada, Europe and Japan stayed free with ads. Chai's founder blamed rising compute costs and later promised a cheap "basic" tier with unlimited messages and ads. Chai's Safety Center still says some regions need a paid subscription.
- February: PiunikaWeb reported unannounced token limits that stopped replies for hours, for free and paying users alike.
- March 8: Chai told Australia's eSafety Commissioner it no longer offers free access in Australia.
- September: Google Play reviews dated September 17 describe chatting now costing Pieces. Reviewers give different free allowances: 120 a day at one Piece per chat in one Google Play review, 50 a day at one per message in an App Store review from September 30. Chai hasn't published the allowance itself; its App Store list sold Pieces from 200 for $2.79.
- October: Chai reports a $120 million annualized revenue run-rate as of October 1, a figure Reuters reported on October 14. By October 24 the iPhone app is gone from the App Store: Apple's lookup returns nothing in five countries checked and the US page returns a 404, though an Internet Archive copy shows it listed on October 14. Chai's homepage still links to the listing.
The Android app, updated on October 20, 2026, and Chai Web still work. If these changes are why you're looking, our Chai alternatives page compares seven reviewed apps.
Chai app or Chai Web: which one are you paying for?
Chai's FAQ calls them separate platforms with no data sharing between the two, so bots, chats and subscriptions don't carry across.
| Chai app | Chai Web (chai-ai.com) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Android (Google Play); iPhone app not on the App Store as of Oct 24, 2026 | Any browser, on a PC or a phone |
| Sign-in | Google, Facebook or Apple account | Google or email |
| Free use | Ads and Pieces; paid-only in some regions | "Free to start"; limits not published |
| Paid plans | Premium and Ultra, billed by the store | Pro $9.99/week or $159.99/year, plus the CHAI MAX add-on |
| Images and video | Image generation from a prompt (eSafety's guide) | Pro only: $0.12 an image, $0.22 a video beyond included credits |
| Refunds | The store's rules | Non-refundable unless the law requires |
| Age check | Persona selfie estimate or ID (Safety Center) | Not described; the FAQ says it's for adults |
Chai says Chai Web Pro carries no ads or sponsored content and that each Pro reply takes about 8 times the compute of an average app user's. CHAI MAX sits on top of Pro: Monthly ($90) doubles the rate limit, and Auto removes rate limits for $0.66 per 1,000 tokens generated, without saying how many messages that buys.
Chai Web is also the answer to "Chai on PC": it runs in a desktop browser with no download. If you need a store app on iPhone, see Chai vs Nomi AI or Chai vs Replika.
Is Chai safe? Age checks, filters and what regulators found
Chai's own safeguards, per its Safety Center and app EULA:
- Adults only. Chai is 18+ and says it confirms age through Persona, a third-party provider, by selfie age estimate or government ID.
- Self-harm protocol. Every user message is scanned in real time for self-harm content; Chai says it refuses or replaces a harmful reply and shows users who express self-harm intent a notification pointing to crisis services.
- User tools. You can report characters or messages anonymously and switch on safety filters that hide mature content in search, hide explicit messages and block characters.
- Hard bans. Child sexual exploitation material, sexual content about real, identifiable people without documented consent, and self-harm or terror material lead to account termination and possible reports to law enforcement.
The outside record is mixed. In March 2026 Australia's eSafety Commissioner published what Chai reported for July to September 2025. Like the three other services examined, it had no robust age check, relying on app-store ratings and/or self-declared age, and it took no action against users under its minimum age. It did not point users to support when self-harm appeared in prompts, did not check outputs across all of its models, and did not warn users about the criminality of prompting for child sexual abuse material. In that quarter, user reports confirmed as breaches of Chai's terms included 504 about pornography, 28 about self-harm and 8 about child sexual exploitation material; Chai said that when users report such images, the content is removed and the account banned. It told the regulator it had since added real-time redirection of harmful prompts and upgraded user reporting. Earlier, Belgian authorities opened an investigation into Chai in July 2024. It followed a 2023 newspaper report about a man who died by suicide after conversations with a chatbot the paper later traced to Chai Research; the paper said a direct link had not been established.
Privacy is the other half. Chai's privacy policy says your messages may be used to improve the chatbot for all users, with personal identifiers removed first, and data can be kept for up to five years after you delete your account. Have I Been Pwned lists no Chai breach as of October 24, 2026.
Does Chai allow NSFW chat?
Not by design. Chai's Safety Center says its models and real-time safety systems are designed to refuse sexually explicit content, and the app EULA bans sexually explicit images and videos of any kind. What the EULA does allow is adult fiction: roleplay may include mature themes and fictional violence, as long as it stays fictional and out of the banned categories. Chai Web's FAQ says some user-made content may contain mature themes and carry an NSFW label, and that content breaking its terms is removed.
Other descriptions differ. Australia's eSafety Commissioner reported that from July to September 2025 Chai let users turn NSFW content on and off, and 504 user reports about pornography were confirmed as breaches of its terms in that quarter. Its eSafety Guide entry for Chai, last updated November 21, 2025, called it uncensored, with sexual and violent themes that can appear unprompted. Google Play rates the app Mature 17+, with sexual themes among the reasons, and the App Store listing archived on October 14, 2026 noted infrequent sexual content or nudity. Chai's safety filters for hiding mature content and explicit messages are something you switch on.
If explicit roleplay is what you want, Chai's own rules exclude it. Reviewed platforms that allow adult roleplay for 18+ users include SpicyChat AI, which is also built on community characters, and Kindroid; the closest match is in Chai vs SpicyChat AI.
Does Chai remember your chats?
Chai documents no memory feature. Its web FAQ, EULA and store listings describe characters, ranking and creation tools but nothing you can view or edit about what a bot remembers; Chai's own comparison page against PolyBuzz only describes Chai's memory as "conversation-persistent".
What you can steer is the story itself. Australia's eSafety Guide describes an "instruction" feature for changing a bot's personality, gender, tone or storyline mid-chat, plus editing the bot's messages or asking for a new one. When you build a bot, you write its name, opening message, personality and backstory.
Keeping chats is a separate worry. A Google Play review from September 2026, marked helpful by about 2,000 people, says chats were cut to "3 chats per person" and deleted after 30 days, and an App Store review archived in October complains of chats disappearing. Chai hasn't published a chat-retention rule for the app; its privacy policy covers how long it keeps data, not how long chats stay visible.
If memory matters most, Nomi AI documents short-, medium- and long-term memory you can browse and correct; see Chai vs Nomi AI.

What Chai AI really costs
Chai has two price lists that don't share accounts. On Chai Web the cheapest paid option is Pro yearly at $159.99, about $13.33 a month; weekly Pro at $9.99 works out to about $43.26 a month. For the app, Chai publishes no plan prices outside the stores; the last public US list (App Store, archived October 14, 2026) put Premium at $13.99 a month and Pieces at about 1.4¢ each in every pack.
| Plan | Billed | Per month | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chai app, free | $0 | — | Ads; Pieces for messages per store reviewers (free daily allowance not published); paid subscription required in some regions |
| Chai Web Pro trial | $0 for 24 hours | — | Converts to the $159.99 yearly plan unless cancelled before the trial ends |
| Chai Web Pro, weekly | $9.99 per week | ≈ $43.26/mo (×4.33) | Full character library, Chai's 'most advanced' models, no ads, priority response speed |
| Chai Web Pro, yearly | $159.99 per year | ≈ $13.33/mo (÷12) | Same as weekly |
| CHAI MAX Monthly (Pro add-on) | $90 per month on top of Pro | ≈ $103.33/mo with yearly Pro | Double rate limit, priority responses, Chai's 'most powerful' models |
| CHAI MAX Auto (Pro add-on) | $0.66 per 1,000 tokens generated | Usage-based | No rate limits; billed in arrears. Chai doesn't say how many messages 1,000 tokens covers |
| Chai Web images and videos | $0.12 per image, $0.22 per video | Per use | Pro only, beyond any included credits; you confirm before the first paid generation |
| App Premium (US App Store list, archived) | $13.99 per month or $134.99 per year | $13.99/mo, or ≈ $11.25/mo (÷12) yearly | Tier features not published by Chai |
| App Ultra (US App Store list, archived) | $29.99 per month or $19.99 per week | $29.99/mo, or ≈ $86.56/mo (×4.33) weekly | Tier features not published by Chai |
| Pieces (US App Store list, archived) | 200 for $2.79, 500 for $6.99, 1,000 for $13.99 | One-time | ≈ 1.4¢ per Piece in every pack |
- Per-month figures: weekly price × 4.33 (52 weeks ÷ 12 months); yearly price ÷ 12.
- Chai Web shows weekly Pro as '60% OFF' a crossed-out $24.99. $9.99 is 60% below that figure, but no $24.99 plan is offered on the page.
- 52 weekly Pro payments cost $519.48, so the $159.99 yearly plan costs 69% less. 52 weeks of app Ultra cost $1,039.48, against $359.88 for 12 months at $29.99; 12 months of app Premium cost $167.88, so its yearly plan saves $32.89 (about 20%).
- App prices are the US App Store in-app list as archived by the Internet Archive on October 14, 2026. The iPhone app has since left the App Store, and Google Play shows only a range ($0.99 to $899.99 per item) without plan names. The archived list also showed a $9.99 'Premium Membership' with no stated period.
- Chai's own comparison pages say Pro starts 'from $9.83/month', a figure its pricing page doesn't show; this table uses the pricing page.
- Chai Web plans and add-ons renew automatically. For plans billed yearly or longer, Chai's terms promise a reminder 15 to 45 days before renewal, and price changes are announced 7 to 30 days ahead by email.
- Chai Web also sells an Image Generation package (50 images a week) and a Video Generation package (150 videos, granted once), each as a yearly subscription; their prices are not on the public pricing page.

- Who runs it
Both the Chai app and Chai Web are run by Chai Research Corp., a Delaware-registered corporation (File Number 6527981) at 555 Hamilton Ave Ste 300, Palo Alto, California. Its company page says it was founded in January 2021 and had 15 to 20 employees as of October 1, 2026. The app EULA and Chai Web's terms are governed by California law.

- Billing
App purchases (Pieces, Premium, Ultra) are billed by Google Play, or by Apple for existing iPhone subscribers; Google Play lists in-app items from $0.99 to $899.99. Chai Web bills your payment method directly and charges CHAI MAX Auto and per-use images and videos in arrears. Chai says its business is subscriptions, in-app purchases and advertising, about 60% purchases and 40% ads by its own data. Accepted payment methods and the card-statement descriptor are not stated.

- Age checks
Chai is for adults 18 and over. Its Safety Center says it confirms age through Persona, a third-party provider, by selfie age estimate or government photo ID. The App Store listing archived on October 14, 2026 rated the app 18+; Google Play rates it Mature 17+, although the Safety Center says it is 18+ on both stores. Chai Web's FAQ says it is for adults but describes no age check. Australia's eSafety Commissioner found that from July to September 2025 Chai, like the three other services it examined, relied on app-store ratings and/or self-declared age with no robust age check, and took no action against users under its minimum age.

- Data and privacy
Chai's privacy policies say your messages may be used to improve the chatbot for all users, with personal identifiers removed before conversation data is used for model training. Free users see ads with consent, and usage patterns may go to ad partners for install attribution. Data is stored in the US and kept for the life of the account plus up to five years after deletion. Chai Web's FAQ says Chai shares no personal data with third parties, while the policy names suppliers acting as processors, and Google Play's data-safety section says the app may share location, personal info and other data types with third parties.

- Content rules
Chai says its models are designed to refuse sexually explicit content, self-harm content and anything that sexualises minors. The app EULA bans sexually explicit images or videos of any kind, child sexual exploitation material, sexual content about real, identifiable people without documented consent (including deepfakes), terror and self-harm material and high-impact violence, with account termination and possible reports to law enforcement. Roleplay may include mature themes and fictional violence, as long as it stays fictional. Australia's eSafety Commissioner reported that from July to September 2025 Chai's terms mentioned NSFW material and users could turn NSFW content on and off.
The generation, sharing, or distribution of sexually explicit images or videos of any kind on the Chai AI platform is strictly prohibited.

Australia's eSafety Commissioner published its transparency findings on four AI companion services. For July to September 2025, Chai relied on app-store ratings and/or self-declared age with no robust age check, took no action against users under its minimum age, did not point users to support when self-harm was detected in prompts, did not check outputs across all of its models, did not warn users about the criminality of prompting for child sexual abuse material and did not state that it reports such material to authorities. In that quarter, user reports confirmed as breaches of Chai's terms included 504 about pornography, 28 about self-harm and 8 about child sexual exploitation material. Chai told the regulator it had restricted free access, added real-time redirection of harmful prompts and upgraded user reporting; it has offered no free access in Australia since March 8, 2026.

PiunikaWeb reported user complaints that a token limit, never explained in the app, stopped replies for hours (in some cases more than a day) for both free and paying users. Chai's founder first blamed server problems.

The Washington Post reported that Belgian authorities had opened an investigation into Chai in July 2024 after a complaint (as cited by Wikipedia). It followed a March 2023 report in La Libre Belgique that a man had died by suicide after conversations with a chatbot named Eliza; the paper later identified Chai Research as its developer and said a direct link had not been established. Chai said it added a crisis-intervention feature.

Our Verdict
Chai scores 6.1/10 with us. It is a character-roleplay platform built on a user-made library that Chai puts at over 25 million characters and on language models Chai says it trains itself, with Persona age checks and real-time self-harm scanning described on its Safety Center. The score reflects what it doesn't offer or document: Chai says explicit content is refused by design, there is no published memory feature and no documented voice or video calls, images and video are Chai Web Pro extras, and the app's free use now depends on Pieces, ads and your region. The iPhone app is off the App Store as of October 24, 2026, and the app and Chai Web are separate products with separate subscriptions. If you're leaving, our [Chai alternatives](/alternatives/chai-ai) page covers seven reviewed apps; for a like-for-like check, see [Chai vs PolyBuzz](/compare/chai-ai-vs-polybuzz-chat-ai-friends).

What changed
- First full review. Checked Chai's Safety Center, app EULA (July 28, 2026), app and web privacy policies, company facts, Chai Web pricing (Pro, MAX, Images), FAQ and terms, the Google Play listing, Apple's lookup (no listing) and an archived App Store copy from October 14, 2026, the eSafety Commissioner's findings and guide, Wikipedia and PiunikaWeb. Scores set with the capability rubric and the editorial categories. A same-day verification pass re-read the pricing page (Pro, MAX, Images), terms, FAQ, Safety Center, EULA, both privacy policies, the Google Play listing, the archived App Store copy and the eSafety pages. It narrowed the eSafety age-check wording to the report's 'and/or', added eSafety's 2025 findings on the NSFW on/off option and confirmed report counts, re-sourced the February token-limit item to PiunikaWeb, added the conflicting reviewer Piece allowances, and attributed the explicit-content and in-house-model claims to Chai.
