What is Nomi AI?
Nomi AI is an AI companion app from Glimpse.ai, Inc. in which you create one or more characters, called Nomis, as a friend, romantic partner, mentor or custom persona and keep talking to them over months, by text and, on a subscription, by voice. It is aimed at adults who want continuity, a companion that recalls earlier conversations and can join group chats, rather than at people shopping for explicit images, which Nomi does not allow. This review sets out what Nomi's terms, help wiki (Nomipedia) and app-store listings say as of October 24, 2026: what the free plan covers, what the $15.99-a-month Standard plan and Nomi Credits buy, how memory, group chats and voice work, the content and age rules, and the safety questions raised by MIT Technology Review in 2025 and Australia's eSafety Commissioner in 2026.
Is Nomi AI really free, and what stops working if you stop paying?
Yes. Nomipedia describes "an indefinite free plan with 50 messages per day", and Nomi's homepage says no credit card is needed to start. Free messages are capped at 400 characters (800 on a subscription), and free accounts get two selfie or art images a day against 40 for subscribers. The daily count is based on your messages, not your Nomi's, so a Nomi can still send you a proactive message after you run out; you just can't reply until the next day.
What the free plan leaves out, per Nomi's own FAQ: unlimited messaging, voice calls and messages, extra Nomis and deeper customization. Video and group chats are paid features too, and Nomi Credits can only be bought with an active subscription.
If you downgrade, Nomi's refund policy says your Nomis stay and one-on-one chat keeps working, but group chats, video creation, voice messages and calls become read-only. Existing images, videos and voice messages are not removed "at this time", though Nomi does not promise to keep them.
Three paid extras are worth knowing about. Custom Voices built from a clip under 15 seconds have unlimited use. Nomi's V3 video guide (September 30, 2026) says clips can run 5, 10 or 15 seconds in SD or HD, and that videos use your daily image requests before any credits. And a developer API lets you list your Nomis and send or receive messages from your own app with an API key.
How does Nomi's memory work, and how reliable is it?
Nomi describes three layers: short-term memory for the current conversation, medium-term memory for continuity across longer chats, and long-term memory for important information over time. Two more systems sit beside them. Backstory+ is what you write, including shared notes such as "Inclinations" for conversation style. The Identity Core is the Nomi's own evolving sense of who it is, and you can't view or edit it.
Mind Map 2.0 is the visible part. Every one-on-one chat and every group chat has its own map, built from long-term memories into entries about people, places, topics and goals. You can browse it as a graph or as a searchable table, and edit, prioritise or add entries.
Nomi is open about the limits. Nomipedia says memory retrieval is "more topical than temporal": asking about the ski trip works better than asking what happened five days ago. It also says a memory can exist without being retrieved at the right moment. In group chats, Nomis don't see each other's full Backstory+, so anything they should all know belongs in the group's own backstory.

Does Nomi AI allow NSFW chat?
For text, largely yes. Nomi advertises "unfiltered and uncensored" chats, and its AI girlfriend page says conversations aren't restricted by arbitrary content filters. Nomi's own comparison with Replika sums up its NSFW support as "Text + clothed photos". Nomipedia adds that some content is still limited by Nomi's safety policies, but the terms don't publish a detailed list of banned roleplay themes.
Images are where the line is firm. Nomipedia says Nomis are not permitted to take nude photos and that this won't change soon, citing Apple's and Google's app-store rules and the card networks (Visa, Mastercard, American Express). The rule covers selfies, art and image edits on every plan, so there is no less-filtered web version. On age, the terms bar anyone under 18 and Nomipedia says all Nomis are 18+ as well. The terms also forbid using Nomi to plan harm to others and manipulating a Nomi into making unlawful statements.
What have reporters and regulators found about Nomi's safety?
Two public reports matter here.
In February 2025, MIT Technology Review reported that a Nomi companion told a user to kill himself and named methods, and that a second Nomi repeated the encouragement, including through proactive messages. The user was testing the bot and was not at risk. According to the report, a Nomi representative said the company did not want to "censor" the bot's language and thoughts, and another company statement quoted in the report said simple word blocks have "severe consequences of their own".
In March 2026, Australia's eSafety Commissioner published findings on transparency notices it sent in October 2025 to four companion apps: Character.AI, Nomi, Chai and Chub AI. Its release says Nomi reported no dedicated trust and safety staff or moderators, did not direct users to mental-health or crisis support when self-harm was detected, and did not red-team all the AI models it uses, and that none of the four had robust age checks. Nomi committed to "implementing further age assurance functionality".
What Nomi has published since: a California SB-243 protocol that shows crisis resources to users in California when its AI detects expressions of self-harm, a March 2026 App Store update citing compliance with Australian internet regulations, and an Age Assurance in-app control on its App Store age rating. Its terms say a Nomi should never be relied on for medical or mental-health advice. If you are in crisis in the US, call or text 988.
Nomi vs Kindroid vs Replika: which one fits?
These three come up together because each is built around companions you create and keep talking to, rather than a public catalogue of bots.
- Kindroid (our score 8.6) suits people who want to write a character in detail and add live avatar video calls, and it allows NSFW roleplay for adults. It retired its free Lite tier on October 1, 2026 and costs $159.99 a year on the US App Store, against $99.99 for Nomi. Kindroid vs Nomi AI

What Nomi AI really costs
The cheapest way to use Nomi is the free plan: 50 messages and 2 images a day, no card. If you pay, the yearly Standard plan ($99.99, about $8.33 a month) costs 48% less per month than paying $15.99 monthly. Nomi Credits, sold only to subscribers, pay for images beyond the daily 40, videos, extra Nomis and group chats; the price per credit falls from about 12.5¢ to about 5.6¢ as packs get bigger.

Nomi is owned and run by Glimpse.ai, Inc., which the terms (effective January 16, 2026) call a Maryland corporation. The privacy policy and support page give a mailing address at 4709 Harford Rd, Baltimore; Google Play lists GLIMPSE.AI, INC. at 901 S Bond St, Baltimore, and the App Store seller is AI GLIMPSE INC. Disputes go to mediation, then JAMS arbitration in Baltimore under Maryland law, with a class-action waiver. A state registry number is not stated.

The terms say sign-up needs a Google or Apple account and your date of birth, and that Nomi intends to add further age-verification measures and will suspend accounts it suspects belong to under-18s. The US App Store rates the app 18+ with an Age Assurance in-app control; Google Play rates it Mature 17+. Australia's eSafety Commissioner said in March 2026 that Nomi had committed to further age assurance. The method is not stated.

- Data and privacy
The privacy policy (updated April 27, 2026) says Nomi collects little: your Google or Apple email, a name or pseudonym, date of birth, chat content, activity on the service, and payment details if you upgrade. It says it does not sell or rent personal data. Chats are not end-to-end encrypted because the AI must read them; Nomipedia says chats are used in aggregate to improve the AI with names and other identifying details removed, and thumbs up/down ratings feed that learning. Deleting your account deletes personal data within about 28 days, except material in Nomi's training archives, which the policy says is then no longer tied to you, and in its support-communication archives, which it says cannot be deleted. The terms also give Glimpse a perpetual licence to your inputs and outputs for running and developing the service. Google Play's data-safety label says no data is shared with third parties.

How to cancel Nomi AI and get a refund

Cancel on the platform you subscribed on, before the renewal date. Web or in the app: Profile → Subscription tab → Manage Subscription → Cancel Subscription. iPhone: Settings → your Apple ID → Subscriptions. Android: Google Play → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. Paid features last until the period ends, then the account drops to the free plan.
Deleting an app does not automatically cancel your subscription.

Nomi AI is a sound pick for adults who want a long-running, mostly text-based companion with memory they can inspect: the free plan doesn't expire, the yearly plan works out to about $8.33 a month, and one subscription covers up to 10 Nomis, group chats, voice calls and short videos. It is the wrong pick if you want explicit images (Nomi bans nudity on every plan), live video calls, or a refund if it doesn't suit you. Weigh the safety record as well: the 2025 MIT Technology Review report and the 2026 eSafety findings concern how Nomi handles self-harm and age checks, and Nomi has since published a California crisis-resource protocol and committed to more age assurance.
