What the marketing rarely spells out is that voice messages (the AI sends you a recorded clip and you reply when you like) and live voice calls (you talk back and forth out loud, in real time) are different products. Some platforms ship only the first. Others offer real-time calls, a few add live video, and one documents calls to your own phone number.

If you want an AI girlfriend you can actually talk to, knowing which app does what keeps you from paying for a plan that doesn't deliver what you thought you were buying. Voice messages vs voice calls vs phone calls: what the labels mean

Vendors use the word "voice" for several different things. They aren't interchangeable, and most of your buying decision comes down to matching the kind of voice to what you actually want.

Voice messages (AI to you). The AI turns its reply into a short audio clip that plays inside the text chat, and you reply by typing. This is the most common voice feature because it's the cheapest to run: no streaming and no speech recognition, just text-to-speech on the AI's reply. Because it isn't real-time, a short delay doesn't matter; what matters is how natural the voice sounds, how many voices you can choose from and how many messages your plan includes. On a few platforms "voice" is even simpler: SpicyChat AI's text-to-speech and Secrets AI's "Play Voice" read a message aloud on request.

Voice messages (both ways). The same format, but you can speak too. Your audio is transcribed and passed to the AI, and the reply comes back as another clip. It feels like a walkie-talkie exchange rather than a phone call: you send, wait, receive. Jupi AI lets you send voice messages and get spoken replies, and Kupid AI's Pro and Ultra plans let you talk to your companion with your voice (transcribed to text). Platforms don't always say whether you can send voice as well as receive it, so check the plan details if this matters to you.

Live voice calls. You tap a call button, the app opens a microphone session, and the AI answers out loud when you finish speaking. Turn-taking (how quickly the AI responds and whether it stops when you start talking) decides whether this feels like a real call or a radio exchange. Calls are much harder to build than recorded clips, so they cost more: where a platform says how calls are billed, it's through a paid plan or per minute in tokens, coins or credits. 17 of the 26 platforms we review document live calls; the table below shows which.

Calls to your phone number. A live call that rings your actual phone instead of playing in a browser tab or app. SweetDream AI is the only platform in our coverage that documents this: Premium members can call in the browser (2 tokens a minute plus 1 to start) or on their own phone number (20 tokens a minute plus 10 to start).

AI-initiated calls. The companion calls you instead of waiting for you. Among the platforms we review, Kindroid documents it: its proactive mode can send messages, voice notes and selfies, or even call you. Nomi AI's proactive messages are similar, but your Nomi reaches out by message, not by call. If a platform advertises outbound calls, check exactly what it delivers, and on which plan, before paying for it.

Live video calls. Live voice plus your companion on screen, with expressions that follow the conversation. Only a handful of platforms document this; see the live video section below.

Custom and cloned voices. Instead of picking a preset, you create a voice for your companion, sometimes from an audio sample. Nomi AI makes a Custom Voice from a clip under 15 seconds, Kindroid from samples you upload or from a text description, AI Peeps lets you design or clone voices, Nastia AI includes voice cloning on its Unlimited plan, and Muah AI lists voice cloning on its higher tiers.

Where the voice field actually splits. The biggest difference isn't between good and bad voices; it's between kinds of voice product. 17 platforms document live calls. SweetDream AI (with featured characters), Kindroid and Replika add live video calls, and Joi AI and Eva Chat list video calls "where available". Five platforms offer voice cloning or custom voices made from your own audio. FantasyGF publishes the largest number of preset voices of any platform that gives a count (36). Everywhere else, voice means voice messages, and the questions become how many you get and on which plan.

Who provides the voices. Most platforms don't say which voice technology they use. Darlink AI names ElevenLabs, Jupi AI's privacy policy lists ElevenLabs for its voice calls, and Nomi AI can add ElevenLabs voices if you have your own ElevenLabs plan. Kindroid doesn't disclose its provider, and MyDreamCompanion doesn't advertise one. Without that information, the only reliable way to judge a voice is to listen to it yourself.

Unlocks on: Joi doesn't state which plan includes voice chat. Premium is $19.99/month, and Premium Plus adds a hands-free voice mode. Joi is a web app only, with no App Store or Google Play app.

Kindroid also has Learned Context memory you can view and edit, and native iOS and Android apps alongside the web.

It also offers real-time voice calls, voice is one of the attributes you set when creating a character, and all tiers are uncensored.

Combined with its uncensored positioning, that makes it an option for voice in adult scenarios. Our review notes that stability can be hit or miss.

• OurDream AI (Voice 7.0, overall 7.9): unlimited audio messages and voice calls (50 DreamCoins a minute, from 1,000 DreamCoins a month) on Premium ($19.99/month, or $9.99/month billed yearly), alongside image and video generation.

• Darlink AI (Voice 8.0, overall 8.4): ElevenLabs voices with multiple accents and emotional tones: 6 standard voices on Essential ($12.99/month), 10 premium voices on Advanced ($27.99/month) and all premium voices on Ultimate ($49.99/month). The free tier includes 5 voice messages; after that, playback costs about 0.5 tokens a message.
• SpicyChat AI (Voice 6.5, overall 7.8): text-to-speech with custom voices on the top I'm All In tier ($29.95/month). The reason to use SpicyChat is its community library of hundreds of thousands of characters and unlimited free messaging, not voice.
• Romantic AI (Voice 5.5, overall 7.6): audio messages paid with Hearts, and no calls; its Terms describe chat via text and photos. It scores 9.0 for Realism but is built around emotional conversation rather than voice.
• Polybuzz (Voice 5.5, overall 7.1): character voice playback, unlimited with a membership; coins can extend voice chat duration, but no real-time call is described.
• Eva Chat (Voice 5.5, overall 6.7): its Terms describe a text and voice interface and a video call feature where available, but not the format of either. Like Romantic AI it scores 9.0 for Realism, and it's built around conversation first.
• Kupid AI (Voice 5.0, overall 4.9): voice notes metered in minutes (12 a week on Pro at $12.99/week, 35 a week on Ultra at $24.99/week) plus voice input; no voice on the free tier.
• Selira AI (Voice 3.0, overall 6.8): no voice at all. It's built around unlimited free chat and image generation, and its Live Cam plays muted, pre-made clips.
• AI Girlfriend Chat & Roleplay (Voice 3.0, overall 6.6): a text-only iOS app that is no longer on the App Store, so new users can't download it.

Live video calls, where your companion appears on screen, reacts with facial expressions and answers in real time, are the most ambitious form of voice in the category. Platforms that document them:

• SweetDream AI: live video calls and Live Cam shows with featured characters on Premium, paid in tokens, alongside its browser and phone-number calls. It also has our highest Video Generation score (9.5).
• Kindroid: live avatar video calls with real-time lip-sync and gestures on the subscription or trial; you can turn on your camera so your Kindroid sees you.
• Replika: both store listings describe video calls, its 3D avatar appears during calls, and Platinum adds real-time video recognition.
• Joi AI and Eva Chat: their Terms list a video call feature "where available".
• MyDreamCompanion: a "Dream Roulette" AI video chat billed per minute in Dream Coins.

Less certain: GoLove AI's homepage says selected characters support a "Live mode" for video-style real-time sessions, Candy AI's review mentions "Candy Roulette" video chats at 5 tokens a minute, and Nectar AI's homepage advertises video calls that its plan table and help docs don't list. Treat these as unconfirmed until you see them on the plan you'd buy. Live Cam shows (SweetDream AI) and Dream Cams (MyDreamCompanion) are shows rather than calls, and Selira AI's Live Cam plays pre-made clips.

What makes live video harder than live voice:

• The audio has to stay fast enough for natural conversation.
• The video has to stay in sync with the audio, with lip movement accurate enough not to feel uncanny.
• Facial expressions have to follow the emotional tone of the conversation.
• All of it has to work over ordinary home and mobile connections.

Because live video streams continuously, it needs a stable connection and uses far more data than text or voice messages, so Wi-Fi is the safer choice. How to judge voice quality: what "sounds human" means

When you try a platform's voice, these are the things worth listening for:

Response speed. How quickly the voice starts after you finish speaking (on a call) or after you send a message. Small delays barely matter for a voice message you play later, but on a live call they quickly make the conversation feel stilted.

Turn-taking. On a call, whether the AI stops when you start talking and picks up naturally when you finish. A weaker implementation talks over you, responds a beat late, or sounds like someone reading a script.

Naturalness. Whether the voice sounds like a person or a synthesizer: pitch, breathing, small pauses, the rise at the end of a question, where the emphasis lands.

Emotional range. Whether the voice can shift from playful to serious, or from warm to intense. A warm reply read in a flat monotone breaks the effect. Nomi AI describes its voice as shifting tone and cadence with the AI's emotional state, and Darlink AI advertises emotional intonations.

Fit with the character. Whether the voice matches the character's written personality. Candy AI, SweetDream AI, Soulkyn AI and Nectar AI set the voice in the character builder, and Joi AI has a tone-of-voice setting.

Accents and languages. If you want something other than American English, check what's offered. AI Peeps lists 7 languages and Darlink AI multiple accents, Nomi AI's voice is designed primarily for English, and many platforms don't say.

Voice choice. How many voices you can choose from, and whether all of them are on your plan. FantasyGF lists 36 on Premium; Darlink AI unlocks more voices as you move up its plans.

Glitches. Abrupt cut-offs, odd pronunciation of names, or audio that stops mid-sentence.

Why response speed matters more on calls

Typed chat lets you pause, edit and rewrite before you hit send. Voice messages give you a spoken answer, but the loop is still asynchronous: you send, wait, hear a reply, think, and send again, so a short wait doesn't break the flow. Live calls remove the gap. The AI has to keep up with you, you have to keep up with the AI, and the conversation finds its own tempo the way a conversation with a person does. Every pause between you finishing and the AI starting to speak is noticeable, and longer pauses make it feel like a walkie-talkie exchange rather than a phone call.

A few platforms address speed in their plans: MyDreamCompanion offers ultra-fast voice messages on Ultimate, and AI Peeps' voice chat mode can reopen the microphone by itself for hands-free back-and-forth. Speed depends mostly on the platform's infrastructure, so it's a reason to choose a platform rather than something you can tune, but your own connection still matters, especially for calls and video on mobile data.

If you've used voice messages before and found them underwhelming, a live call is a different product, so judge it on its own terms.
