Why it matters. Builders reflect different design philosophies. Step 1: Choose Your Visual Style

The first decision in most builders is the visual style. It sets the overall look of your character and can affect which options are available later.

Realistic is a common choice and suits a grounded girlfriend or boyfriend experience. SweetDream AI, MyDreamCompanion and Candy AI all focus on realistic generation; each scores 9.0 for Image Generation in our ratings.

The best results usually come from combining both: start with two to four core traits that create some tension, then add a paragraph that fills in the gaps. Be specific. "Nice" produces generic replies; "dry humor, loves astronomy, slightly sarcastic but caring" produces a distinct character.

Step 4: Write a Backstory and Set the Scenario

A backstory answers the question: who is this person beyond the conversation? A companion described as "a marine biologist working at a coastal research station" or "a graduate student who plays guitar" has far more to talk about than one with no history at all. Named people, places and events give the AI more to hold on to than abstract traits.

Relationship context sets the tone. "We just met" produces different behavior from "we've been together for a year" or "old friends reconnecting", and it shapes how quickly the relationship develops.

Voice. Content level. Decide whether the character stays SFW, is flirty, or allows adult content, and set it during creation rather than finding the limits mid-conversation. Nectar AI and Romantic AI have optional NSFW modes, Darlink AI unlocks NSFW only on paid plans, Nomi AI is unfiltered in text but keeps images clothed, and Replika is romantic only, with no explicit content. Step 6: Check What Your Plan Remembers

Memory is what turns a one-off chat into an ongoing relationship, and a backstory only helps if the companion keeps using it after the first session. Custom characters use the same memory system as pre-made ones on each platform, and depth usually depends on your plan. Memory generally falls into three tiers:

• Session memory keeps information within one conversation and resets when you close it. It is common on free plans; Darlink AI's free plan is session-only.
• Persistent memory carries your name, preferences and key moments across sessions. Nomi AI includes it on its free tier.
• Long-term or editable memory tracks relationship progress over weeks, and on some platforms you can view and correct what the AI has stored.

With the builder done, your companion is ready to chat, and on most platforms you can generate images of them in different settings, poses and outfits. Platforms that tie image generation to the builder (such as Candy AI, Darlink AI, FantasyGF and MyDreamCompanion) use your character's defined appearance, which is a quick way to confirm the look is right. Iteration is key. After the first few conversations you will notice where the personality feels off or the backstory needs more detail. Most platforms let you edit personality traits, backstory and scenario settings after creation, while visual changes can be more restricted to keep images consistent. Use the first week as a refinement period: adjust traits, add details and reinforce what matters through conversation.
